Subject:Long long time ago
Time:10:44 pm.
Gosh, it's two days off being a year ago since I last posted anything here. Facebook has indeed taken over.

May do a year review but as a quick catch up in relation to my last post wanting new ink, new body and new hair - I do have new ink, the hair is getting longer than ever, tho the colour has gone pants, and I've yo-yoed away almost 10lbs, done another marathon and improved my muscle tone somewhat.

Subject:Klimt
Time:6:53 pm.

Today's Google layout, or Go--le given the positioning of the characters. Possibly not one of their best as the image doesn't actually create the letters unless the figures' heads and enlongated bodies are meant to be 'g' but then they'd make 'gg'.

But anyway, liking this. I've liked this painting and many of Klimt's other works in similar style for a number of years. My room in halls had an Athena poster of this and Gareth sent me a series of postcard images with witty comments in an attempt to brighten my room and my mood.

I've always liked the combination of lifelike and accurate face and hands of the couple but the flat, draping collage of their clothes. Is this meant to be an amourous or passionate kiss ? Always seems forced and somewhat unwanted to me.

Subject:Proper post
Time:8:39 pm.
So time for a proper post - what I did in the Easter holidays -

Got off to a bit of a bad start, leaving work 4 hours late on Good Friday and cancelling three hair appointments. Was very tempted to sack it all and shave my head. Didn't. Back to Black (dye) (and wardrobe choices).

Saturday - train over to not so sunny Sheffield for Resistanz festival number 2 and a good warm up for Infest later in the year. Nice to see people, tho a lot of missing faces. First time back in The Corporation since October and VNV's dedication to Paul, and first time seeing some people since the funeral. Saw some good bands, shame about serious technical difficulties for the main band I wanted to see. Half the food stalls listed in the programme were non existant and with nowhere inside to go if you didn't like the band that was on, lived in my hoody the whole weekend and got seriously snuffy being surrounded by all the smokers. Bought a new corset and skirt so I'm sorted for outfits for August. Mini plastized schedules were very useful tho the plastic carrier bag for programme, flyers and such was wasteful and were seen dumped all over the venue (hint to Infest organisers).

Tried nine different beers and one cider in The Devonshire Cat and The Sheffield Tap. And yummy food in the former, which just about kept Mike going as queing for half an hour for a burger gets boring, and cold.

Home on Monday to do laundry and sleep.

Tuesday was Mike's mum's 60th birthday and we OD-ed on cultre at Chatsworth House looking at works of art and furniture and sculpture and all sorts of lovely things. Relaxed over afternoon tea (more on than in the next post) then walked around the gardens looking at more sculture and plants and grouse/pheasants. All very nice.

Wednesday we hid from the weather and caught up on a load of TV we had taped.

Thursday we made the perhaps foolish attempt to go to The Lego Discovery Centre at the Trafford Centre. In the Easter Holidays. Surprise surprise we decided not to queue for 3 hours and spent an hour in the shop instead. Next time we'll try a weekday in term time and book in advance.

Saturday was a party for Mike's mum and that was pretty much a week away from work all over and done with. Definately needed it.

Subject:Let's try this again
Time:6:56 pm.
First post of the year and it's already March and the most I have to offer is a list. It's a start, right.

So I saw 110 films last year for the first time, 87 of them at the cinema. Some good, some bad, some fecking dire (I suggest should you ever find it, you avoid The Reverend at all costs).

I saw my first ever Woody Allen film (Midnight in Paris) and loved it, tho I don't know if it's representational of his other work. Black Swan reminded me that I'm actually quite glad I never made it as a dancer, tho I did love hearing her bones click. 127 Hours taught me to always take your (sharp) penknife out treking.
Some things are better left alone - Brideshead Revisited film wasn't a patch on the TV series, which I have rewatched recently so it's not an inaccurate memory, although others are quite beautiful - the Japanese version of The Borrowers - Arriety.
And Breakfast at Tiffany's has lodged itself firmly in my top 10. How did it take me til 32 to see that ?

Would I be a better person if I'd read 110 books ? (I read 18. Six of them have been adapted into films) Or been to 110 exhibitions/galleries/theatre productions ? Or done 110 hours community work? Let's say 2 hours a film that'd be 220 hours of something. Just over nine days. Could have been a holiday somewhere. Maybe it was a holiday somewhere.

83. The Theatre Bizarre 9.10 - Short film montage
84. Contagion 21.10 - Thought very accurate and non Hollywood
85. The Debt 21.10 - as has been said, early scenes much better than present day. Male characters fairly non-descript.

86. The Ides of March 5.11 - George Clooney can talk his way out of pretty much anything.
87. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 11.11 - Swedish version. Finally finished the book and saw this before the Daniel Craig version comes out. Very inkeeping with the book, time line sped up a lot and all side stories cut out.

Three days of a horror film festival did help with this batch.

Subject:Films of 2011 (so far)
Time:8:10 pm.
Films 2011
1. Chatroom - AMC 3.1.
Very obviously from a play. Good use of actual rooms as chatrooms/profiles. Conversations somewhat stilted. Do teenagers really talk like that ? Not sure if it was a better first film of the year than last year's Sherlock Holmes on New Year's Day.
2. Love and Other Drugs - AMC 3.1.
Funny, less cliched than the usual dying girl fodder. Good social history of drug reps in USA in late 90s. Best line - What's the matter with you? Have you been molested by a Care Bear?
3. Once upon a time in Mexico - TV 6.1
Um, yeah. This made absolutely no impact.
4. Season of the Witch - AMC 7.1
Limited cheesey lines from Mr Cage, always good. Ron Perlman fabulous as always. Good demonic possession disguised as witchcraft.
5. Elizabeth: The Golden Age - TV 19.1
Lovely costumes and scenic shots. Othere than that, nothing to write home about. First one was better.
6. Black Swan - AMC 21.1
Lots of ballet. Suits me. Good balance of crazy and supernatural. If a ballet could really have the dancer becoming the swan it would be amazing. Visually stunning at times.
7. Morning Glory - AMC 22.1
A bit of fun. Nothing special. Harrison Ford looked like he'd had some serious work done. Gonna start shouting at the screen if anymore women in films run that easily in films.
8. 127 Hours - AMC 24.1
Visually impressive. Music video style. Great aerial shots. Only slightly wishing he'd just get on with the cutting the arm off business. Not too gruesome and not too annoying to just watch one character for most of the time. Flashback sequences non intrusive. Don't forget your good penknife kids.
9. The King's Speech - AMC 24.1
Very English period drama. Couldn't help but think of Eddie Izzard opening doors and walking into rooms. Odd moments of great humour. Did seem to turn into Colin Firth by the end of the war speech tho. Great character exploration of his struggle to even read a bedtime story to the children let alone address the nation.
10. How do you know ? -  AMC 28.1
Hmmm. Proof that good rom-com films are a rare thing. Thought it'd be on the same level as How's just not that into you which was very very and a little too true to life. This on the other hand was just bad. Reese Witherspoon was soooo bad. Totally unbelievable as a 31 year old, a baseball player, in love with either male lead, or even a human being. The interaction between Paul Rudd and Jack Nicholson tried to save the day but didn't make it. Another film where all the good bits are in the trailer.
11. The Mechanic AMC 30.1
The Transporter part 3, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Shoot 'em up funtastic. not gonna change the world but good fun.

Black Swan-  Prinkworks 3.2
Even better the second time around. Jumped in all the right places again and spotted things I missed the first time.
12. Buitiful Cornerhouse 5.2
Who'd have thought a film about dying of prostate cancer would be so ethralling. Not what I'd call a beautiful film or one you can say 'I like' about. Not a 'nice' film but very very good and very engrossing. As the reviews say it's not the touristy side of Barcelona, but I liked saying 'been there' occassionally. 8/10
13. The Fighter AMC 11.2
Christian Bale back on scary skinny format and Marky Mark still improving with age. That man is the good wine equivalent of an actor. Very frightening trailer-trash stereotype sisters and mother, made all the more frightening knowing its based on a true story. 6/10
14. Men Who Stare at Goats TV 18.2
Very odd and very amusing. I think the opening line, of this is based on more truth than you would believe says it all. fab. 6/10
15. War of the Worlds TV 18.2
Not really expecting much and ol' nasally Tom lived up to expectation. Lots of screaming and running around and everyone is dead, and then click your fingers, everything's ok again in the last 20 seconds of the film. Really hoping the book doesn't go like that. 3/10
16. True Grit AMC 18.2
Brilliant performance from the three leads particularly the young girl. Pity she didn't get the Oscar, and really should have been nominated for female lead considering her screen time. Ending a little weak. 7/10
17. Never let me go Printworks 19.2
Very sombre. Now reading the book. Good stuff. 7/10
18. Howl Cornerhouse 25.2
Interesting mix of documentary, graphics and poetry reading. 6/10
19. I am number four AMC 25.2
Early contender for worst film of the year. Highschool teen angst bullcrap. Timothy Olyphant totally wasted as the babysitter dying too early to impart any useful knowledge. Plot holes as big as your fist. Great baddies with all the best lines and costumes. 1/10
20. Drive Angry AMC 25.2
More fun shoot em up this time in 3d and getting to look down the barrel if a gun. Great lines, great accountant fun all round. 7/10
21. The Rite AMC 26.2
Anthony Hopkins wandering accent. Suggests suffering a trauma leaves you open for possesion. Not great. 5/10

22. The Adjustment Bureau AMC 4.3
Really liked this, just ignore the Inception-meets-whatever reviews. Emily Blunt's humour balances out matt damon's drippiness. Good echoes of Dark City. Loved the doors opening to random places. 8/10
23. Brideshead Revisited TV 5.3
TV series was better 4/10
24. Girl with a Pearl Earring TV 6.3
Book was better. Even tho it's quite a short book, she describes Griet's wonder of the paintings so vividly but Scarlett Johannson just looked like she was looking out the window. The sidestory of her interation with the daughter didn't make sense. 5/10
25. The Terminal TV 11.3
Learn English by comparing the Russian guide to New York to the English guide to New York. In a week. Bollocks. How they can't find a proper interpreter is head shaking. Bonding over Napoleon?  3/10
26. Little Miss Sunshine TV 12.3
Really sweet little film. 6/10
27. Priceless TV 13.3
Beautiful French film, gorgeous costumes and locations. Cute little story and engaging characters. 6/10
28. The Lincoln Lawyer AMC 18.3
Good fun. I like courtroom dramas.
29. Unknown AMC 18.3
Was alright. Nothing special. Bourne meets Taken. And he's still unknown by the end of it.
30. Battle: Los Angeles AMC 19.3
31. The Eagle AMC 26.3 Jamie Bell fabulous, t'other guy - thick necked quarterback. Pretty graphic for a 12a. Very boy's own 1950s novel ending, but quite enjoyable.
32. Death Race TV 27.3Hmm, yeah, even for Jason Statham this was pretty poor. Fast cars and things blow up.
33. A Guide to Recognising your Saints TV 30.3Shia LeBouf grows up to be Robert Downey Jr ? We can but hope. (I was sewing while watching this and did not give it my full attention)

34. Suckerpunch AMC 1.4
35. Source Code AMC 7.4
36. Limitless AMC 7.4
37. Cave of Forgotten Dreams CH 8.4
38. Little White Lies Cornerhouse 15.4
- Suckerpunch IMAX 16.4
Even better on the giant screen. Ok so I know there's no plot or point but what can I say I like girls with guns.
39. Your Highness AMC 23.4
40. Thor AMC 24.4
41. Farewell Cornerhouse 29.4
42. Cedar Rapids AMC 30.4

43. Hanna AMC 8.5
Still the best film of the year.
44. Attack the Block Cineworld 15.5
45. Water for Elephants AMC 21.5
46. Natural Born Killers TV 21.5
47. The Changeling DVD 27.5
48. Pirates of Caribbean 4 Odeon 28.5

49. Julia's Eyes Cornerhouse 2.6 - Still surprised I voluteered to see this. Eyes creep me out something chronic.
50. X-men first class AMC 3.6
51. Kaboom Cornerhouse 11.6
52. Blue Velvet TV 11.6
53. Bad Teacher AMC 23.6
54. Bridesmaids AMC 24.6 - The Inbetweeners for girls. So cringeworthy.
55. Rescue Dawn TV - Christian Bale on scary method actor mode again.

56. Potiche Cornerhouse 1.7
57. The Conspirator AMC 2.7
58. Tell No One TV 9.7 - Excellent French thriller
59. Harry Potter 7.2 AMC 22.7 - Does nobody notice how many children get killed in this part ?
60. Cell 211 Cornerhouse 24.7
61. Captain America AMC 30.7 - Not too bad. Roll on The Avengers movie and we get Ironman back.

62. Breakfast at Tiffanys CH 3.8 - how have I not seen this til now? Love it. New favourite film.
63. Creation TV 7.8
64. Super 8 AMC 11.8 - Fabulous. Not sure if kids today who didn't grow up with ET, The Goonies, Flight of the Navigator and so on will find it so good. Definately reliving of childhood.
65. Arriety CH 14.8 - Japanese version of The Borrowers. So lovely.
66. Cowboys & Aliens AMC 19.8
67. One Day Cineworld Bradford 27.8 - Anne Hatherway's accent does a tour of the counties during the years but nice idea. Just realised I have to book which apparently is better.
68. The Guard CH 30.8 - Brendan Gleeson - excellent as always

69. Apollo 18 AMC 2.9 - Quite surprised I didn't have nightmares after this.
70. Let the right one in TV 9.9 - Swedish version. Very good.
71. Trollhunter Cornerhouse 10.9 - Troll !
72. Columbiana AMC 11.9 - The Leon/Nikita format works again.

Subject:Highs and Lows of Infest 2012
Time:5:50 pm.
Seeing as I did one of these last year, I'll make it two years in a row.

- Upgraded from the Hilton to the Great Victoria, which was indeed great. Crazy four poster bed in a red, white and black room which matched my wardrobe choices perfectly.

- No EDL or other assorted riotous assembly.

- Infact didn't go into Bradford town centre at all. I remember last minute hunts for tights last year.

- Listened to most bands. Highlights were mind.in.a.box, Hocico, Absolute Body Control and Code 64.

- Best VNV show I've been to.

- Ronan Harris made me cry. And laugh. And scream.

- New venue growing on me and not in a fungus kinda way. At least it wasn't midnight and raining when the fire alarm went off this time.

- Hip replacement conversation was extended to a request for me to bring body parts to Infest 2012.

- Managed to avoid being photographed all weekend aside from a few stageside shots of me front row at Parralox.

- Significantly less drama and revelations, good or bad. In fact all in all a very calm weekend. Are we all getting sedate and sensible in our maturity ?

- Great to see people I don't see very often. Is Infest the annual social reunion we flock to unlike Christmas ?

- Great to see people looking so well, and dancing.

- Ate actual food. Mainly at regular food times as well.

- Drank more Jager. Yum.

- Left with a cold. Bah.

And I think the last one was the only low. Damn good weekend.

1st/2nd May 2011 involved a 26.2mile walk about the city of Manchester. At night, in the cold, with glowsticks.

Time on the clock was 9hrs 17mins, but there was severe congestion for the first mile, and a half hour loo queue so thinking around 8 hours solid walking.

Got a medal to prove it and everything.

While I have seen a number of films since the last post I thought I'd do an actual post for a change.

Nice day off catching up on errands which is all so much better to do in the sunshine. Walked to parental abode getting warmed. Filled up the bird feeders and talked to the neighbour's cat lounging on the garden bench sunbathing.

June's holiday to near Barcelona is all booked. First proper girls' holiday so that'll be a laugh. Need to go shopping for summer stuff but following one too many jäger and champagne combinations last Friday I tripped over the curb and after a few hours in a&e and couple of X-rays there are no broken bones but damaged tendons in my left wrist making things like putting on socks and squeezing toothpaste incredibly painful. So no shopping trips for a while.

Popped into town collecting train tickets and hairdye for Resistanz, then the obligatory bi-annual eye test which actually turned into a bit of a giggle after balking at the cost of the test, it turns out my sight is now sufficiently dire to warrant free eye tests and £13 towards frames. Win! So I spend the test money on DVDs. As you do.

Spent the afternoon in the backgarden sharing the warmth with the cats. Lovely.

Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.

What I thought was a pulled muscle in the shoulder following the first spinning class of the new year turns out to be spondylitis, and being the optimist that I am, I'm really appreciating the idea of developing an arthritic condition at 31.

I love my job. I'm bored to tears filling the days with locals and day cases. I long for a joint replacement. (For those of you who've been cringing at my facebook update from last week, the peeling was a Nesbit's Procedure, and you can look at google images yourself for that. First result is particularly fun. Be grateful I posted an ortho picture and not that one.)

Somewhat long winded but I think this is my new philosphy.

You can spend, minutes, hours, days, weeks or even months over-analyzing a situation; trying to put the pieces together, justifying what could've, would've happened - or you can just leave the pieces on the floor and move the fuck on.

Subject:Autumn clean
Time:2:59 pm.
What else do you do on a wet week off work but ransack the house? In theory with the aim of it being more habitable in the end.

So I'm starting at the top and am freezing my feet despite 3 pairs of socks and attacking the loft.

So far I have unearthed Sandman and Sleepy Hollow models which I've moved downstairs so I can actually see them. They've been up here so long the plastic of the boxes has gone yellow.

Found books of scarily embarressing poetry and short stories that I wrote in highschool. Oh so painful on so many levels. Plus sketch books and paperwork from the Russian class I took. Pottery from 6th form, all the pages I carefully saved from editions of The Face that decorated my room in halls. Clothes I thought I'd chucked years ago. Just as well velvet seems to be making a comeback.

Got three bags of rubbish, one for charity and one for paper recycling.

Is there still a market for Magic:The Gathering? Don't think there's anything rare.

50 guilder note? Guessing I can't change it.

Size 10 handmade wedding dress? Scratch that. Must have chucked that on a previous clear out.

Feel like me dad for spending six hours in a loft.

Finally emptied and threw away the last box of stuff that I moved in with. Still had my name on the box to stop my stuff being mixed up with David's. It's only taken nine years. I guess this means I've moved in. Time to look for a new place??

Subject:Two posts in one day SHOCK HORROR
Time:5:18 pm.
I took inspiration from ant_girl who decided to start posting daily on LJ. I knew I couldn't keep that up but have decided to post what I do on my days of, as I was starting to feel like I was wasting my extra day away and productivity levels look better when written down.

So you had Thursday's day off activity including cat-pie theft, and here's todays.

The day has been jepodised somewhat by it being a day off following an oncall and tho I was home by 2am, I managed to sleep in til gone 10 this morning, then stayed in bed til nearly 12 but did finish my book.

Put laundry on, did the food shopping, managed to leave my trolley token in the trolley. Doh. Put food away, put laundry out. Tickled cat tummies when they fell over in the sunshine. Paid bills, pottered on t'internet. Made muffins.

Just need to iron a shirt and have tea then out to see The Birthday Massacre and that's today's activities.

The Autumn gig session started on a high on Tuesday night with Hurts playing The Ritz. Never seen a band there before, and it's such a good venue. All the fencing infront of the stage and the sound desk infront of the DJ house shrunk the space a lot tho, or maybe its like a Creme Egg for shrinking the older you get. Made the most of the sold out capacity and heading upstairs and watched from the front of the balcony. Considering the upstairs is normally closed off the carpet is still remarkably sticky. Lovely.

The band were fabulous and obviously enthusiastic to be playing a home crowd. Found out Wonderful Life was written sat outside Belle Vue dogs, which I drove passed on Saturday when I got stuck in the wrong lane on the way home from work. CD in the car ? Hurts. Very appropriate. They pretty much played the entire album, with the addition of a Kylie cover, and joking she couldn't be with them on stage to do the backing for Evelyn because she was stuck on a 42 in Rusholme. Combining the jokes, in a Manc accent with the image of them suited up, almost doing the goth three step made for a great night.

Next in line is The Birthday Massacre tonight at Moho, another new venue and band. Been listening to them on youtoob and hopefully it'll be a good gig. If nothing else it's free cos I won the tickets the other month at Analogue Trash.

Just booked tickets for Goo Goo Dolls next month. New album for them too, some new material would be good as I ended up seeing them three times on the last album tour. New album is good, quite mellow. Videos online of live shows look a bit more lively. The contrast between the main lead singer and the alternate isn't quite as harsh as it has been on other albums, tho every song does feel like it's missing a third verse, and without lengthy intros a la The Cure, it does feel a little short.

December brings 30 Seconds to Mars (again), with support from Enter Shikari, at the Gmex or whatever it's called now so getting there early, at least the support is worth listening to, and I've met the drummer. And then it's the annual Lister family trip to Runrig. Laugh all you like, they know how to put on a good show. If I get organised I might try to fit a trip across t'Hill to see Rotersand inbetween.

And to start off the new year Ani DiFranco is back at the Lowry, so that's something to look forward to for January.

Seven bands. Four of whom I've seen at least once before. Do I need to broaden my musical likes ? Do other people I like just not play Manchester ? Feck it. I like who I like.

Time:9:11 pm.
Bought cat fud, visited parents, made next week's lunches, repotted a plant, made apple pies and wood pigeon and mushroom pies, washed my hair.

Was a very productive day off, somewhat marred by the last lot of pies being savaged by an undisclosed cat/s while they were cooling. Bah.
